In 2018, One Summer Chicago partnered with Apple and select social service agencies to teach youth aged 14-24 how to code. Everyone Can Code is a learn-to-earn program that trains youth in Swift, the programming language that runs apps for Apple devices.
The goal of the Everyone Can Code curriculum is to make coding knowledge accessible to anyone willing to learn. Students gain a foundation in the technical and collaborative process of developing mobile-based applications in a classroom setting. By the end of this 6-week course, students are poised to join the next generation of coders.
For their capstone project, students work in teams to develop a mobile app that addresses a social need, then present their work at a judged showcase. In the two years since this program’s inception, four of AHS’s teams have placed as finalists, earning themselves scholarship money and iPads. AHS itself was awarded a Mac computer lab where youth continue to train.
